Our Story
At St. Charles Borromeo, approximately 20% of our parishioners and nearly 35% of our students come from Hispanic backgrounds. The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is a special day for Mexican Americans and people of Mexican descent in the United States because of the Virgin's cultural and religious significance to them.
To celebrate inclusivity throughout the community, St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church & School will be hosting an annual celebration to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Our Lady of Guadalupe
In the Catholic Church, the Virgin Mary, under her title of “Our Lady of Guadalupe” appeared to Juan Diego, an Aztec man who had converted to Christianity, in Mexico City in 1531. The name also refers to the apparition itself.
According to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego on December 9, 1531, on the hill of Tepeyac. She introduced herself as the Mother of God and the mother of all humanity, and asked Juan Diego to build a shrine on the hill so she could share her love and compassion with believers. The Virgin Mary left an image on Juan Diego's cloak, which is now venerated in the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City. The Basilica is a popular pilgrimage site and the image is a national symbol of Mexico.
Our Lady of Guadalupe is the Patroness of the Americas and is also known as the Patroness of the Unborn. She is said to have helped the Spaniards treat the Indians with respect and as human beings, which led to 6 million Indians converting to Catholicism in seven years. The Virgin of Guadalupe also played an important role in Mexico's revolt against Spanish rule in 1810.
Let’s Work Together
At St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School, we are committed to the power of collaboration. That’s why we are looking to partner with community sponsors and volunteers who will help make our event memorable. Their steadfast support will inspire our vision and help us create an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.
Key partners in our community, just like you, play a huge role in supporting our continued efforts to work toward the mission of the Church and the salvation of souls, while also providing a place where every child is spiritually and academically nurtured to their fullest potential, creating lifelong learners who value and live our Catholic Faith.
